One for Sorrow

A puzzled magpie called Sorrow sets off on a journey to find his lost Joy.

This uplifting story is designed to help parents and carers support a child in understanding their own emotions, and those of others around them.

One for Sorrow introduces the subject of mental health to children aged 4 to 7, in an easily digestible way.

The introduction is written by comedian, writer, actor and former psychiatric nurse, Jo Brand!

The two main characters in the book were inspired by the nursery rhyme One for Sorrow. The oldest known version of this rhyme dates back to 1780, in John Brand’s ‘Observations on Popular Antiquities, Lincolnshire’.

The lyrics were changed to the following in, A Collection of Proverbs and Popular Sayings Relatin to the Seasons, the Weather, and Agricultural Pursuits. Published by M. A. Denham, London, 1846.
